PortConMaine draws a thriving and welcoming cosplay community. In addition to cosplay programming organized by attendees, PortCon staff run a number of cosplay specific events, from the Cosplay Dating Game to Cosplay Deathmatch. See below for detailed information on our theatrical events for this year! (Looking for our cosplay competitions? Check here!)
PortConMaine is a family friendly event. We ask that you keep this in mind while designing and building your costumes. Please ensure that your costume is not offensive and that none of your naughty bits are showing or discernable. (South Portland city ordinances require that “naughty bits” includes the ‘buttocks’ and the ‘nipples’, as well as the genitalia.) We reserve the right to ask attendees to modify or change outfits at any time if we deem them to be inappropriate. If you are uncertain about a cosplay, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Based on the classic board game, players move around and act in character, finding clues and holding props to figure out which of the other players committed the grave murder. Up to six volunteers are taken each session to play in the game. Equipped with only a clipboard, writing utensil, and their investigation cards, they work to solve the mystery in this live action adventure! Will it be Luffy in the Ballpit with Excalibur? Or was it Alucard in the Closet with the Ice Skates? Only time will tell!
Cosplay Dating Game (All-Ages Version)
Shipping characters was never so easy as this! PortConMaine’s Cosplay Dating Game is back for another year to provide a role playing experience as characters search for love while questioning three mystery bachelors, bachelorettes, and/or eldritch beings. Players will have the opportunity to ask family friendly questions and respond in-character as they try to woo the contestant of their dreams.
Volunteers will be pulled from the audience to participate, and staff will be standing by to help get this improv game rolling. No sign-ups are needed for this game, so come on down and see what wacky ships we can create this year!
PortConMaine’s Second Cosplay Congress will begin session this year with a variety of bills to shape the known fandom universes in ways that we cannot even begin to fathom. Will the Cabbage Protection Act of 2016 in Avatar be repealed to allow for crop devastation? Is someone going to stand up and pass a Dragonball restriction act to raise the minimum age for summoning wish granting dragons? Everything is possible in Cosplay Congress!
The entire audience is encouraged to participate in floor debates. This in character event is crafted for all levels of cosplay actors and political savants to strut their stuff for fun. and often disastrously wacky. results for each fandom affected. Even if you don’t want to get up there and support a bill or politely disagree with another representative, don’t fear. Your “yeas” and “nays” are invaluable! Stick around until the end to see what FutureVision reveals will happen as the result of each bill being passed in your fandom.
Want to get into the action early? Submit your bill before the con so that it gets used by the Senate Speaker!
Cosplay Death Match
The rules of the event are simple: two cosplayers enter, one cosplayer leaves.
Well, ok, you both leave, but one of you ‘dies’ a dramatic and theatrical death. That’s the name of the game!
Join us as we again pit popular characters against each other in a PortConMaine’s deadliest popularity contest. Last year it was CDi Link, Zelda, and Mettaton who trounced the competition, but who will walk away victorious this year?! Enter with your cheesiest one-liners and most over-the-top antics and fight to be the last one standing!

Cosplay Dating Game (18+ Version)
Are your ships too edgy to remain PG or do you merely want to hear your favorite anime boys hit on other anime boys? Sparks will fly, doubles will entendre, and innuendos will intensify as participants engage in-character with the audience and each other as they attempt to woo the bachelor, bachelorette, or eldritch being of their dreams. Join us for this adult version of PortCon’s annual cosplay dating game, where everyone knows what the real goal is.
Be aware: everyone 18 or over is welcome to sign up for either dating game, but this 18+ version will be more explicit in both language and content. IDs will be checked!
