Iron GM at PortCon?
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:20:36 PM »
despite how crappy TotalCon in Mansfield was, this failing Con had one good aspect: The Iron GM competition.

Where as the RPGs have been a growing part of PortCon lately, I was thinking it might be cool to try it out and see if it might be fun.  We may just bring a few more people in that we would have otherwise.  I went this year and placed 3rd.  It was a fun time and i think we could only benefit from the popularity of the event.

Thoughts?

Explain this more.

Iron GM goes like this:

Each Game Master is given three Secret Story Elements he must weave into a 4 hour One Off Session.  At TotalCon, it was Archon, Abbey and Appeasement.  They are assigned to 5 players who have one hour to make characters.  The standard is 3.5 SRD, but it can change to a system the GM suggests if all at the table agree.  The GM may only say Three Words to the players to tell them what to roll up.  I used 5th Level Whatever.

Here's a link to their site.  It's great fun.  It was the best thing about TotalCon

Count me interested.  I know we are running short on space so maybe it won't work until a venue change and we get more room but it sounds very interesting.  I have looked at it in passing before but just sat and really looked and think it would be a blast to do.  I would have to hone up on my 3.5 skills considerably.

I am down for this.  I love new spins on an old tale.  It kind of brings to light the old group of 7 gamers sitting around a table reminiscing about who ran the better game.  Was it Frank, Joe, Ian or Steve?  I am down for this and may the best GM win.

EDIT:  Now when you say verbalize 3 things, does this mean we could write down character creation rules?  I mean we can only say three things but we could write down anything else we want?  OR use shadow puppets, origami, mimes, stand ins, puppets, lego blocks, smoke signals?  To explain creation methods?

You can only nod and shake your head.  some yes/no hand gestures are ok.  you cannot communicate more than yes and no after you verbalize your three words.

I'm going to bring it up at the next meeting as something that might be good for this year, if we have space, or next.  Either way, I think it will ensure we get some fresh blood into PortCon as it evolves

Been looking at the schedule and the space. I think this is a really cool idea, but I'm not seeing how we can make it fit :(
So, this won't be able to happen this year.

I was thinking next year as well.  if we get a bigger Hotel for the con, it's possible.  Iron GM didn't require a ton of space in all actuality.
