Artists notes in manga
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:44:14 AM »
Every manga that I've seen has them, the little artists notes in the panel. Sometimes it points to something and says what it is, or it adds some strange comment. Too many of them are annoying to me though. Fruits Basket seems to be one with too many of them. Each page I think has at least one comment, and where as they can be cute, there can be too many of them. Like in the manga the page I'm on makes and arrow and points to Kyou and has 'Kyous shirt'.......... That is a bit much to me.
What do you think about the artists notes?

A good anime/comic shouldn't need author's notes on every page to explain things, the story should speak for itself. I can forgive some notes explaining cultural differences if it has to do with Japan and it probably isn't familiar to people in the States. Author's notes should be left at the back of the book if at all, although most mangaka's end notes consist with them complaining about their editor.

I like Maki Murakami's Mangaka notes from the series Gravitation. They are quite amusing and later on her assistant's get in on the deal as well.

Yes so many people got "tail" this year thanks to me. I should get some sort of prize right?
