I am curious if anyone else had started watching an anime for things other than its story?
I began watching K-On because when I was listening to AnimeNFO radio they play the ''Dont Say Lazy'' song a good amount. I had never heard of K-On before that and began liking the song so I looked up what the anime was...then watched it. I really enjoyed the anime, and obviously hooked on the song hahah.

I watched Aoi Bungaku because Tite Kubo had done character illustrations for a couple stories. Aoi Bungaku is a 12 episode series of several short stories from Japanese literature. Each story has a different character designer. Not many people know about it, but I would recommend it.

I started watching Samurai Champloo because I was bored out of my skull one night. Then I discovered it was so kick@$$ and watched it all the way through nonstop. (even took the laptop with me to the throne >_< )

There have been a number of anime where I have watched just because I thought one of the characters seemed attractive.

Don't try to criticize, every single one of you have done it before, I'm sure.

I've been known to pick up anime on the basis of art. I also watch anime that have controversy around them (Like Gantz and Kodomo no Jikan), because I like to see if it's worth those twisted panties. And, of course, I've picked up several anime on the basis of adorable shota being present. And some anime I watch for a favorite director, animator or seiyuu.

Actually, plot is usually the last thing I look into. After all, it's hard to tell from a short blurb if a plot is decent. Kuragehime looks boring on paper, but was very well done. I'll watch an episode of anything if it comes highly recommended or fits one of my aforementioned descriptors. I'll stick to something for the plot, but it's definitely not where my initial interest stems from.

I've picked up manga and anime based solely on the cover and the name.... Sometimes when I'm really bored and out of ideas, I'll go to Otaku Center and close my eyes and randomly select an anime and watch it.

Also, Time Warner Cable has Cutting Edge on Demand and sometimes I'll go there and watch what they have regardless of what the name sounds like... Then I at least have a smattering knowledge of anime I wouldn't normally watch. A couple of them are now my absolute favorites! ^_^

Yes! Alot of the times I will see a cosplayer or a costume sketch from a series and be like "I want to see what this is all about that outfit is amazing!!" so I start watching it..Paradise Kiss is one of my all time favorite series and I just randomly picked it up because I had need a cosplayer in one of the outfits and I knew it had something to do with fashion design.

I didn't even think about this, but I bought Maburaho without ever have seen one episode. I had seen an advertisement in a magazine, but I didn't actually know anything about it except the girl characters were well endowed hahahah. I'm glad I wound up liking it  :P

Some anime I watch because I've heard the animation is supposed to be really good, other times it's because a close friend of mine watched it and said it was freaking amazing and that I would love it. Then I would say she's wrong and I would watch the anime just to prove her wrong and end up falling in love with the anime (aaah, how I love/hate you Baccano). Sometimes I'm looking through pictures/videos of cosplays and see a character that looks pretty awesome but never seen what anime they're from. Then I go to look up the anime and watch it solely for waiting for that character to pop up (that's how I found out about Soul Eater xD). But if I am looking for an anime to watch when I'm bored (and don't feel like rewatching a series), I usually do rely on plot to decide whether it'll be entertaining to watch.

I'll admit to having watched all the Queen's Blade episodes on netflix for reasons other than story.

Because honestly, there's not a great story... just scantily clad chicks, suggestive battle scenes and er... yeah.

But more often when I start watching an anime to give it a try its because I like the art style. I do that with manga a lot too.

I do that all the time with dramas.
In fact, most of the dramas I watch are because of one actor in one drama was really good, so I look up what else they've done. It's how I found my current favorite, actually!

There's a few anime where I'm like I bet this poop is stupid, avoided it, then watched it to see why it was so popular. That's how I found out about Hetalia. However most of the shows I watch like this really are stupid and I stop watching them really fast. Other times I watch Yaoi shows for the sake of there being yaoi in it somewhere XD
