who would want to go to a black tie anime dance?
« on: July 12, 2010, 02:31:06 PM »
i've always loved the dances at portcon, but i would have loved to have like a 30 minute block of waltz danceing or something( sue me for being a romantic!). just wondering if anyone else would like something like that. for one i'd be thrilled to see a bunch of people dancing around formal in anime ball gowns and stuff. i just think i'd be cool. anyone else agree? we could suguest it for 2011.

thats what I was hoping the Port Prom was originally gonna be..then it turned into a highschool dance it seems which isnt a bad thing just not what I was thinking when we originally said formal dance.

So in other words YES I would love a time to actually dance couples dances like the Waltz and maybe even the jitterbug!

Is it just me or does the "Port Prom" merely function like an indoor, secondary Rave "Techno Dance Party"?

It turned into a tamer version of the Techno Dance Party. PortProm's first year it was a formal dance. Sadly the dress code for it was gradually relaxed to be nothing more than your average high school dance.

Yeah, but the first PortProm was in that beautiful ballroom at the Eastland. Wearing full-length ballgowns feels more natural there than in a tent on the pavement. (Not knockin' the tent, just saying it's not exactly fancy) I'd love a fancy anime-themed dance, it'd give me a chance to use those ballroom dancing classes.

Moritani: The tent we use is the same tent that some people use for weddings and how fancy is that!! ^__^

But you're right, if I had worn my ball gown like I had originally thought I might the bottom of it would have been ruined. As it is my g/f Heather wore hers and I'm STILL doing damage repair to the bottom!! (She had the big poofy pink skirt with the hoops under it.)

I believe the reason we changed it to PortProm instead of Ball was b/c in the past, there were threads saying "I don't have the right clothing and I really want to go!!! Q.Q..." or along similar lines. Which we're an inclusive convention! We don't like to limit you to the fun things we offer! (Execpt pannels that are 18+/21+.. Sorry! I for one love formal dances and wish there were more of them! Though, I don't think everyone would agree if they'd have to be kept out of a dance b/c they lacked the proper attire. :-/

However, I DO encourage you to check out www.portconmaine.com/asteampunkaffair/ as that WILL be having a fancy dress up dance area. :) At least I'm pretty sure it will... in my mind it does. ^_^

I also wish it was more of a fancy dance, instead of like a "high school" dance. In fact, I didn't go to my high school dances because I really don't care for that kind of dancing (though I fully understand there is some kind of difference between the PCM one and my high school one). I don't know how to waltz or do any of those fancy dance steps, but I am more then willing to want to learn, and dance. I find it very sophisticated.
I would of loved so much to of gone to the PortProm when they held it at the Eastland, but sadly I didn't pre-reg, and even if I did, I wouldn't of made it due to me having appendicitis. ^^;; When they had the PortProm Last year, I tried to go, got all my semi-formal clothes, but I guess the tent lost power, because everyone was turning around, but then I guess it got power back. -shurgs- I don't know exactly what happened but I ended up not going. Anyways, I know it's changed now because we have the tent, and don't get me wrong, I love the tent if we didn't have it I understand we'd be so cramped on room, but part of me wishes we could have a nice formal dance inside. This is just me wishfully thinking.

I went to the port prom last time i went, i had fun. There were some not really dressed formally,it was still fun.
If i get to this portcon would it be one i could wear my kimono? I dont think i have a necessarily ''prom/ball gown'' though.I think i have a suit for james, just a regular suit jacket and pants, no black tie or duck tails or anything;i think thats what the fancy tux things are called.

i dont think you'd need to wear a ball gown or tux, just hoping for more "romantic" music. and some more synced dancing...

Speaking as the man behind the port prom I respect people's desire for a more formal event, but feel that a black tie affair doesn't mesh well with portcon. We tried to have a strictly formal dance at the eastland, and people certainly dressed the part,  but when I played the fancy music no one danced. It really wasn't until the playlist was altered to a more "high school dance" style that people loosened up and started having fun.

We relaxed the dress code somewhat in 2009, but the foul weather really put a damper on people, and the event didn't go very well. This past year's event was the most succesful it's ever been and I think that's because people responded really well to the 80's Dance Zone. In my mind this past year is a great model of what the dance should be.

I don't really want the Thursday dance to become the rave 2.0, but it won't ever be billed as abdormal ball either. It was a fun experience, but the crowd just wasn't into it. Next yearvwe mat reemphasize the semi-formal dress code to give people a chance to dress up, but i'm not interested in excluding anyone who wants to dance and have a good time.

Those are just my thoughts though. Feel free to continue to add your feedback and I can work on making the portprom into something everyone can enjoy.

Why not hold a panel that teaches people how to formal dance?

Hey Mick what about adding a theme to the dance to inspire people to dress the semi-formal ways...

We did.
Had a panel that got out enough before the dance so that folks could get all prettied up and go. You know how shy geeks tend to be.
