you could always try to sign up as returning. make sure you mention that you didn't staff in 2010. Worst case you get told to wait and join up with the throngs of new staff

Question.. If we have been on staff before, but were unable to this past year, should we use the returning, or wait for the sign up in Aug.

I wouldn't say we are hurting for help. We're glad to have any talented people we can find. With about half of our positions filed by returning staff I wouldn't call us hurting.

I also find the idea of needing contacts for staff on a anime con a stupid idea.

It's not a stupid idea, it's the same with any other job. A reference is a good way to find out how well you work with others and to make sure you're reliable.

Can They just make fixs to both of them to make it more fair to newcomers.

... That doesn't make any sense. Returning staff don't need references because they have their performance at the past convention to speak for them. If a returning staff member was a total meathead a the convention, they don't get in. If they did a decent job, they do get back in. How is this unfair?

Surely you have a teacher or friend who can vouch for you? References don't need to be... unicorns or anything like that.

Still, it is completely fair, though it does not need to be.  We only want the best to staff our con, and by asking references or looking at past performances we often get that.  The sooner you understand this, the sooner you will be another of our awesome staffers.
