Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament

I saw on the schedule that on Saturday there will be a Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Tournament.

My question is, are the official Tournament rules being used with the Forbidden Cards/Limited/Semi-Limited cards being monitored?

Howdy,

Yup - we'll be using the official tournament rules including all up to date banned/restricted lists. We just don't really have the space to print them all on the website / booklet (because if we did Yu-Gi-Oh! we'd have to do Pokemon and Magic as well and that'd eat up a lot of space). There'll be some signs up in the room with the full rules, and a judge will be there to keep everyone honest in deck construction.

I found a list on a site good from March 1, 2010, so I'll use that as a guide, and bring some extra cards just in case.

Though, Advanced or Traditional? Which one should be followed?

As a regular tournament goer, I would greatly suggest sticking with Advanced format.

Honestly I feel since it's an all around Anime convention and not a "Yu-Gi-Oh" convention, I feel the traditional more layed back set of rules would be nice for soft core players, I've played Yu-Gi-Oh from the start and I feel like all these hardcore 'rules' and 'restrictions' just ruin the fun of the game, but overall it's up to the people at Portconmaine to decide, but I would like a response on what format we're using as to build my deck accordingly

I'll get in touch with our CCG head (who is not always on these forums) but I think we're leaning towards traditional. As was pointed out we're not a Yu-gi-Oh! convention so want to give people as many options to play with as many cards as they can. Granted this means that some people may be able to fashion super powerful decks to smash everyone's face in, but it also means that people who dredge up their old cards won't accidentially construct illegal decks and be unable to play.

edit: Based on feedback from the forums we may also offer 2 tournaments (one for each ruleset) so that everyone would be accommodated. We hesitate to do this at first because we are unsure how popular Yu-gi-Oh! will be and we'd rather have 1 bigger than, than 2 smaller ones.

The only problem I see with trad. is that some of the really good cards that are banned are hard to get. so you will get the total smashing of faces. Not everyone has raigeki and featherduster. I actually went to a tourny that was traditional and those two cards make all the differance. =_=
It would also seem unfair to those who bring advanced into a trad. not knowing.

If you want it to be fair, it has to be Advanced style.  A Traditional tournament would have to be announced as such separately same as a Type 1 or Extended Magic tournament.  It's two completely different play styles and deck types.  No one would necessarily have the cards for a Traditional deck style.

How about this compromise. You go ahead and run the Advanced tournament. If anyone runs a deck that has some banned cards in there, we'll have them taken out of the deck and I'll bring my rather extensive commons box for replacements that the players can keep.

But yeah. I'd rather keep the tournament as fair as possible, and if that means deckchecking people and handing out free replacement cards from my own personal collection, I'll do that.

After taking over judging the Yugioh tournament, I now know what I need to do a better job next time.
