Geek Jeopardy feedback
« on: June 28, 2010, 11:36:51 AM »
I ran the Geek Jeopardy panel on Thursday and was wondering what you all think I could have done to make it better? More fun? More inclusive?

The leap in difficulty from Group 1 to Group 2 was rather... substantial, in my opinion. I could answer 85% of the questions in any of Group 1's categories, but I struggled with a lot of the stuff in Group 2. Though seeing as how you separated the groups based on age, I can understand why.

I think hand-raising would have made the game a lot fairer in the long run, especially seeing as the person sitting closest to the mic had a decent advantage. Even better, if at all possible, get one of those buzzer devices. I can't be sure how much they're worth, but they would be really useful.

Other than that, it was a fantastic panel. Full of fun and amusement!

Finally, "5000 points taken away for making a crack about the Star Trek category being all about Stargate!? THIS IS MADNESS!"

Hhaaha.

Buzzer: In all seriousness though, we DID have a buzzer!! Until the morning of... and finding out that the cat chewed through the wire that operated it... don't worry the cat is no longer with us.. she was delicious and fed us through con. *burp* J/k. However, next year there WILL be a buzzer system regardless of cats or not.

Categories and Hardness: I did try to do them out proportionately, And I do have a careful checks and balance system of "Hey random person. Answer these questions... were they hard? Okay then!" :p B/c to me, some of the questions are easy for me but horribly hard for you. And vice versa. Case in point: Mecha not Gundam... I thought NO one in the audience or the contestants would get them.. however I was pleasantly surprised that all the answers were questioned.

I do try to make it more fun than not. And I'm quite happy with the prize support this year, as opposed to Last year's old copies of Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat.  ^__^

less throttling during things I know nothing about might be nice. That and buzzers. Loved the 5000 point loss for the star trek/ gate slip, going to try to make that happen again. I can deal with a total of 200 points winning the game... long as it's my 200 that does

I enjoyed the categories, and the fight for the mic was part of the fun!

I do understand how a buzzer will even the playing field for next year. Hope I can participate again!

It was a wonderful panel! I thought the difficulty from 1 to 2 was fairly equal. Buzzers would be nice because when it came to "Zombies" and "Chuck Norris" it was hard to know how close we could be before taking it, but I understand why they weren't there. I was also happy at the difficulty of Whedonisms. It was a great way to start the Con for me so thanks you so much!

Thanks guys and dolls! I love hearing all this positive feedback! ^_^

And next year there WILL be a buzzer system in place.

Any ideas on how to get more audience participation? Does the random trivia questions for the audience appeal? I know candy can be an awesome motivator. ;)

I know that I loved the random candy flinging and audience trivia. It made everyone feel included and amused them, as well. Once people learned to duck when the candy flew, it went off without a hitch :P.

Maybe we can think of a way to incorporate physical challenges or something involving the audience? Like if only one contestant beeps in for an answer, but an audience member raises their hand as well, they have to fight over who gets the points. If the audience member wins, they decide which of the 3 players gets the points.

I see this as a way to ensure balance between the players if one person repeatedly and easily gets all the questions in a single category. This way the player who thinks that they are the only ones who knows the answer will be in for a rude awakening against the audience's knowledge.

I just thought of this idea a minute ago, so I'm sure it needs some fine tuning. What do you think?

Actually I think that is an awesome idea! And I do think that more candy for audience participation is a good idea too.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I am a jerk but I think you should take out the subjects where the answer is the name like zombies and Chuck Norris. Maybe some real questions with those as answer.

Is the a chance for a daily double thing with a picture or sound?
It would be epic if the audience could give pints. I might have a chance without having to count on someone making a joke about star gate/trek

Neph: Indeed there is! However, with the powerpoint I was using I didn't have the time to figure it all out. Now that I know how it works I'll be definitely having one next year! ^_^
