new hentai panel host
« on: June 27, 2010, 07:12:45 PM »
Like the title says, can anyone OTHER than that one dude who hosts the hentai panel run it next year? The whole misogynistic garbage stories are getting both irritating and old; I realize I'm saying this about a guy hosting an 18+ panel, but just because it's 18+ and for mature audiences doesn't really mean it's okay to tell stories about abusing women.

Anyway just a SUGGESTION, feel free to disagree with me on this if you want.

All I know is that he had some wicked good stuff planned, but due to technical difficulties, there was no way to do what the panel had originally planned.

Yeah, that was pretty irritating too, but I'm not pissed with the technical difficulties so much as I am the way in which he hosts the panel. Like, I just go there to watch hentai and have a laughs--not listen to this guy make the same terrible jokes and listen to the same terrible and offensive stories he tells every year.

to be honest, no. its neph's panel, and he runs it how he wants to run it. If he wants to tell jokes, that are in no way about it being "okay to abuse women";i know this guy personally and can vouch for him. These arent jokes, they're stories about his life and the psychotic things that happen to him. He explains this in the first minute of his panel, that its offensive, lewd, crude, and "if you want to leave, then leave."  Some people do go there for just the hentai, and usually there's filler in the beginning, but sometimes, people are there for the stories. Personally I'm there for the stories.  I'm not saying this as an attack, going "MNAH seriously stop complaining", i just want to explain how I viewed it being in that panel as well.

I'll admit, I was there for the hentai. And I had heard most of those stories before, so I didn't really enjoy it as much as in the past. Nonetheless, don't switch hosts. Neph does a great job and has in past years, too. The problem was that we had a DVD player with parental controls. Not his fault, and he did a good job of entertaining regardless. The crowd laughed, and even though I'm a femanazi, I wasn't offended. He's a good guy, and his stories are funny, mostly true and not that harmful. Honestly, anyone else wouldn't have covered as well and the night would've straight-up sucked.

Sol, he can host the panel however he wants to host it, but it's awfully... I don't know what the word for it is... Inconsiderate, I guess, to just disregard people's level of discomfort just because "you know the guy and can vouch for him". Like, don't get me wrong--I'm obviously not a prude because I went to the hentai panel in the first place--but I just don't think it's cool to just... encourage woman abuse/abuse of any kind for the sake of getting a laugh. And please do not try to tell me that stripper story isn't abuse, because it is; there's absolutely nothing funny about the story and the fact that he tells it with such bravado and people (mostly dudes) LAUGH is disgusting. If it is fake, then it's like, whats the point in even telling it?

Anyway, back to the general point--I would disagree that if anyone else started hosting the panel, it would suck. It might be worth some consideration for next year, anyway, especially if Neph doesn't have anything new to bring to the table.

scoots, no human being on earth is capable of running that panel beside him or those that share his blood... and if you're bothered or offended by something in a panel FOR ADULTS, then do as the great George Carlin said to do and go the **** outside, kthnx

as for the whole inconsiderate "woman abuse" crap... I know neph fairly well, I know how jokes operate (again, George Carlin fan) and I know the lines of what is truly considered abuse, I can say with great certainty that you seriously need to stop talking, as you have no idea what you are talking about. you're getting all worked up over a true story that happened 20 years ago, and you didn't even hear the part where a bunch of bouncers chased him out of there, or that this place was a real place in mass. seriously boy-o, grow up

Can everyone please take a deep breath before you start going for each other's throats?  An opinion is an opinion, and before y'all kill each other, please remember that.
Telling someone to 'grow up' because they don't find a story about abuse funny is not very polite.  Two different people can be mature and still have different humor tastes.
Please be RESPECTFUL of each other.

There were huge tech issues, and a panel isn't something that we can always control. Neph was trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Thank you for your feedback although being 18+ there are obviously going to be adult things in the panel and maybe some things that you don't agree with. (Cause remember, all the hentai out there all the characters are totally 18  :eyeroll:)  If you found Neph's jokes offensive I'm sorry to hear that and if there are tech issues again next year you do have the option to leave the panel and come back at a later time when the videos may be up. I do know Neph brought up the idea of having a separate panel for some new material next year and keep it separate from the hentai. Will that happen? Who knows, but we'll figure that out later.

So we are listening to your feedback and thank you for it, but do know that the panel had nothing but tech issues and Neph instead of canceling and disappointing 118ish people tried to make the best of it. (Based on his numbers he outdid the auction)

I've been keeping an eye on this for a little while and feel it's time to get involved. First off Anidex is right. Put the fangs away. no need for Thunder Dome over this.

Yes I do know some of what I say and/or show will offend some people. It's the nature of the beast. It's how I run and will continue to run that panel. If that's not for you it may be a better idea to check out some of the other fun to be had or at a minimum when I switch to a part that not video go grab a snack and  maybe hang with the security guard. If people want to do this I'll make sure to get word to the hallway when the movies will start again.

The reason I tell some of the same stories year after year is I get very tired of telling them 5 or 6 times a convention. There are people who come time and again to this panel and some have told me that part of why they keep coming back is they only get to hear that material 1 time a year.

I do agree with you Scoots the story is disgusting, disturbing and something that should only be shared with adults. I however don't find the story misogynistic. To be that it would have to show a hatred and distrust for women. In all actuality it shows a contempt for the people who frequented a certain establishment. I am not exactly singing praises of the men who were in that place or myself for being there. Your interpretation may be slightly askew. My point of view is from a male perspective so my telling is from that angle. The fact is I like women. I want them to be empowered. I love what the can be if they try. A woman can be any and everything she wants. She should be all that she desires to be, and anyone man or woman who stands in her way should be shoved out of it. I do not believe that women should get to have both sides of the coin. If they dress in a revealing way they should not get mad when people look. They should never say "But I'm just a girl" and expect to be on par for everything. Of course physical limitations make some differences but outside of sports I see no need for different classes. My thinking is in more of a squishing spiders and changing oil direction. In my eyes gender exclusionary jobs are very few and have to do with donations for reproduction and feeding infants. That's all, nothing more.

The Thursday panel I'm working on is more of another venue to tell stories about my messed up exploits. I've been through a lot and much like Greek tragedy turned in to a dark comedy it can be darn funny at times. My plan is to lower my concerns over capacity at  the Hentai panel by giving preregistered people a chance to hear that same material they keep coming back for on another day and maybe let some people experience the Saturday panel that would miss out. Unlike my Saturday panel it won't have any real jokes. It's all things I have been through. Scotts I think you may want to give that one a pass.

I'm honestly not trying to be inflammatory while I voice my complaint; in all actuality, all I'm asking is for the "WOMEN ARE STUPID WHORES" thing to be toned down. Women at the convention, especially those attending the hentai panel, are already put in an awkward position. I don't think there needs to be that cherry on the cake where someone on staff represents woman-hating ideals for con-goers to praise (and whether or not neph himself thinks he isn't misogynistic isn't really up for debate here)

Meanwhile, I would really appreciate not being talked down to like I'm a feminazi baby shittymcshitpants--I'm 23 years old, I'm female, and believe it or not I've got a sense of humor! I may be in the minority when I say I don't find nephs "entertaining stories" entertaining at all, if not entirely loathsome by nature, but I don't think it's totally ridiculous of me to sit here and voice my dislike of how the hentai panel has been run for the past 2 years. And I say that as someone who has attended the panel for the last 5 years: does anyone actually remember how the panel was run those prior 3?

It was certainly wasn't like this in those years, and the panel was just as packed then, and people had just as much fun.

I'd just like to respond to the misogyny comments. As Neph's daughter, I can assure you that he is not at all misogynistic, I cannot think of a SINGLE incident when he had misogynistic comments. Sure, the story being mentioned is full of bad things happening to women, but guess what, bad things happen to men in his stories, too. I'd also like to point out that the three years prior that you mentioned were also ran by my father. Thank you.

Alright complaint's been noted.  before this spirals out of hand, I'm going to lock this thread.  Both sides have aired their points of view, and it doesn't look like either side cares much about changing it.  And that's okay.

Scoots, If you still feel strongly about this, I suggest filing the feedback form on the front page.
