Cosplay Chess
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:36:47 AM »
I was watching a video on Youtube, and saw a game that looked fun, cosplayers act like chess pieces then, fight for victory.

It's like Wizard Chess but for Cosplayers.

We get this suggestion all the time, and I think that often the conclusion is that there is no space. Should the opportunity to do this event present itself, know that it's constantly in the back of every staffer and organizer's mind! ;)

Okay here's some liability issues.  When you say fight... how do you mean?  Who among us have had enough martial training or even stage combat training to do this safely?  More now thanks to Chris Ayers but still far too few to make this safe.  The only possible way to make this safe that I can think of is to make this a boff event.  Which means doing it in the parking lot, which means it'll be weather dependent.

It's very tame Rag. I've seen it before. We just don't have space is all (I think we tried one year? In the tent?)

Here's what Cosplay Chess usually looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdvflVPVh6w

It's significantly more "mock-fighting" and "not really hitting or touching the other person fighting" than stuff like Boff.

That'd I would so do that. I would love to help out with that or even host the event. I'd soooo host that. I could set it with the mock combat and everything having martial arts and mock combat experience.

That'd be good if there were 20 experienced cosplayers/mock combatants that'd be willing or the possibility to train said 20 people as well as hold the actual chess match within the span of a couple of hours. While it seems like a fantastic idea without time being an object, we would have to fit cosplay chess within the time constraints of the convention. Awesome idea if we had the time to do something like that, but doing it with a 2-hour time constraint could prove to be an issue.

The only legit way I could see it even remotely happening with our current con layout is if it's shown in the tent via projector, live streamed from one of the larger panel rooms where it would actually be happening. While this way would cause the least problems, it presents its own issues. People walking in on the chess match, the fact that live streaming it could prove difficult (unless Tech-Ops could manage it), the fact that it would be the ONLY event that takes up two rooms, thus cutting down on alternative programming.

Oh snap he done challenged...

Cosplay Chess is a great idea, but as others have said, time and space and participants are all issues here.  I'm not the person to rule anything out, but I find it very unlikely Portcon will be able to do anything like this in the near future.  Unless, of course, we got more Tents....   :P ;)

Well HDK, I can see it happening like this. We'd use the larger room inside the hotel for the actual "combat" and players pieces. The doors would be shut to that room and we'd have it shown in the tent. I'd see it going as if you were on a web chat with someone. We'd either have the feed being sent from 1 computer to another or have the feed just sent to that one computer and have it projected.

I would be willing to train the people. It isn't all that hard. It'd take me Maybe 5 minutes if that for each person. I'd probably train them in mass group. I'd spend extra time with the melee people just as a precaution.

Overall, I think it'd be a great event so long as we had EVERYONE that was called for it.

Bleh, then what's the point?  Where's the challenge?  I want to see a battle chess game where a the fighters can change the outcome of who takes who. :P  It would be far more interesting boffer style. :P  Hmmmm... maybe at the MBG.

Ragabash, I understand that and that brings up another point for me, i'd love to do something like that except it involve actual combat. There is no disrespect to boffers but boffing can become slightly bland after a time. If battle chess was something that was possible, we'd have to find trained hand to hand fighters and have rules set up.

Aaaand, there's the line.  I getcha mate, I personally hate the styles that develop because of the way boff is set up.  Most "skilled" boffers leave their heads wide open. :P  But, there's little way we'd ever get 32 people with enough training to be safe, which is why I suggested making it a boffer event. :P

It makes total sense and yes styles that come from boffing. that is why I train using a 6 foot staff cause it's offensive and defensive. BUT it is possible to do get the 32 people to have enough training to be safe. It'd just take me some time to explain.
