Something can have parts which are old school while still having a new part.  Some examples:
Raiders of the Lost Ark = old school, Crystal Skull = new
Classic Transformers = old school, Michael Bay version = new
Early episodes of The Simpsons = old school, current stuff = new

I'd say that list is a pretty good argument for why old school = better.

The oldest ones I like are Detective Conan and Sherlock Hound. :P DC is still going though, it started in 94 for the manga I think and 96 for the anime? and Sherlock Hound was in 84 through 85.

I've been wondering if the first season of Digimon would be considered old school? It did air in America in 1999. I just don't know.
