Well, you also have to remember that the computer with most of the rave setup on it fried on friday and mick had to scrap things together onto his laptop at the last minute.

And if you think all DJ's do everything on the fly, you are sorely mistaken.    ;)

The person in question spent over 40 hours MIXING songs. I consider that DJing.

I'm sorry, but as mentioned: Mick is our Con DJ. We're not accepting applications for anyone else. It's not up for debate. Oodles of people enjoyed his work, I appreciate his effort, and that's kind of end of discussion. I totally don't mind people making suggestions, but I find it slightly offensive and bothersome that there are a select few who keep asking to: co-DJ, DJ instead of him, etc etc. He worked over 40 hours ON HIS OWN TIME (we're volunteers) and his computer blew up weekend of. THEN he quickly spent HOURS fixing everything on another computer to be ready to go day of event...

Again. Appreciate that, please. And some of you should stop trying to find ways to usurp the position- I'm convention chair. I've pretty much told you: Mick's Con DJ. ;) And even if he does decide someday to step down, my first thought won't be using DJs who spent hours on the forum trying to say he sucked. If anything, it just makes me want to pick someone else to take over for him should he decide not to DJ. ;)

Mick's choice in music is impeccable.  No one can even come close to replacing him.  Before Mick took over we had folks come in and mix a bunch of techno songs together with no pauses for speech.  So no offense but that's not really djing a geek convention dance.  We want our geek tunes, we want our witty remarks.  Mick knows his crowd and he delivers what they want.  The entire crowd inside the tent chanting his name shows that.  :Ragabash:

the rave rocked, the music kept me moving, it was worth a shot to mention it. haha. I think I would rather mix and mingle with the con'ers anyways.

End of subject.  Props to Mike, wow I hope your equipment is okay.

So many people ready and willing to defend my honour on the forums, that's sweet of ya'll, but I'd like to say a few words on my own behalf.

I'm glad people enjoyed the rave this year. Its true that I don't mix on tables at the actual event because I feel more comfortable doing most of the 'grunt work' in various PC audio programs before the event starts. That way I am more confidant in my ability to deliver a solid show to all the people who come out. This year was exceptionally challangeing in  that regard because the PC with all of that information on it blew up on Friday and I was left only with my laptop that didn't have most of the programs I generally use to run the rave. Thankfully, the laptop did have a backup of most of the pre-mixed songs and it only took a few hours to get everything (mostly) recut and reordered. I literally finished the last edit at 7:52pm right before the rave got going.

And the show went off mostly without a hitch! A beachball trainwrecked the show at one point when it hit the mixer (a one in a million shot), and one of my mp3s was corrupt and forced an awkward transition later on, but I am satisfied overall with the event I put on. There wasn't even too much grumbling when we were forced to end a little early due to some unforeseen circumstances.

In the end I really want to thank everyone who attended for being such an awesome crowd. We had over 800 people out, and the floor was always packed with energetic dancers.  People were even kind enough to cheer and applaud and grant me an encore. So thank you Portcon. Thank you for coming out to my little rave, and I hope I'll see you on the floor next year.

(ps - I'll post the set list soon)

I had never been to a rave before, but was hoping to go, and certain staff encouraged me, so I went, and LOVED IT!

I don't how The Mick knew what to do when he did it, but that crowd never died. The smallest of hints that it MIGHT and he had a trick up his sleeve, like toys, glow sticks, or a song everyone knew. I had only ever seen him at the dance, so I was blown away at the rave. I don't know how he kept his energy up the whole time, but it was absolutely amazing.

That being said... do you do weddings? :3

The rave was one of the BEST events.

It was really hot and crazy in there but the atmosphere was great!! Everyone had so much fun and I LOOOVED the songs. I liked having One More Time at the end. It was just a great last song. [:

:D

Formal was great too. Even though everyone left and my shoes were making my legs want to fall off by the end. Haha.

I for one Loved the Micks Music choices and appreciate the time hes put into it. Although, I would have substituted just one or 3 of his songs. I like to stick it to the techno/metal-techno. Putting some mainstream songs in kinda scared me away, the i came back when Metalocalypse played.

I think some of us old timers appreciated the mainstream bits.    :Thbbbt:

It was really awesome Mick, as always. :D Especially pulling it all off in what was essentially a "petri dish." >.<
